I have bought computer with preinstalled Ubuntu linux distro. I know some things about linux generally, but I have never use it for some real work. Now I want to do that. What I need to know is how I can see which programs are already installed on it, because I have some preferred programs which I am get used to it.

I do not what to say to you. If I were you, I would go to application menu and see what programs are listed there. Because, some of the programs are not usually in that menu, you can always check some of default locations for installed programs in linux like
/usr/bin,/opt/bin,/sbin,/bin
Also check if there is any bin folder in your home directory. If it is there might be some programs installed only for that user.
