I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP, and I want to disconnect the touch pad and use a regular mouse only. Can this be done, and if it can, how? I don't need to make any physical changes, do I? Would it be difficult to re-enable it later, if I change my mind? Thanks for any assistance you can give, and excuse my ignorance.

There should be touchpad settings available under Control Panel / Mouse. If they are there, uncheck the box saying "enable". If you can't find these settings, it's possible that your touch pad is being recognized as a regular mouse, in which case you need to go to the Device Manager (Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager), find the "phantom" mouse device and disable it (right click, choose disable). Don't forget to restart after making these changes.
