Hi! I have a computer with XP on it. Lately, it’s been really slow and it seems that the situation is getting worse every day. So I decided that I should reformat my hard drive. I’m not really good at all that technical stuff so whenever I had problems in the past, I would call my boyfriend. Unfortunately, now he’s my ex boyfriend so I’ll have to reformat my hd alone. I remember that when he used to do it, it didn’t look so tough but I don’t remember what exactly am I supposed to do. Thanks in advance!

You remember correctly - it really isn’t that hard. With Windows XP, first you need to find out which file system you have on your hard drive. To figure that out go to “My Computer”, right click on your C drive and then choose Properties. Look for the "File system" entry. It will say either NTFS or FAT32. Next few steps are the same with either file system but later it will be of importance. Start the computer by using the Windows XP CD-ROM. You need to go into your BIOS to change the boot sequence to do this making your CD-ROM drive your primary boot device. The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer by pressing a certain key – usually it’s ‘delete’ or escape – maybe you’ve noticed “hit ‘del’ to run setup” or similar message when you start your computer. Once the computer has booted from the CD you'll see a "Welcome to Windows Setup" screen appear and after all the drivers have loaded choose to use the recovery console. In the “Recovery Console” specify the appropriate Windows installation. It will be listed. It's probably #1. Then log on by using your Windows XP Administrator password. You are probably the administrator and if you have never assigned a pass it is probably blank, so just hit the Enter key. Next, type: map and hit Enter. Note the drive that you want to reformat. The drive letters may be different in the Recovery Console from what they are in Windows XP so you may have to recognize the one you want to format by it’s size. Next, type: format C: /fs:ntfs if the file system is NTFS or format C: if the file system is FAT32. And then you can reinstall windows using the same disc that is already in your CD ROM.
