I hear it all the time, spinning and humming. It's not that it bothers me much, I'm used to the sound, but I heard it's possible it'll come to harm like that, if it's on all the time. I don't want to shut off the whole machine, but isn't it possible to have the hard disc "rest" when it's not in use? I think I had it set up like that on an old computer of mine. This one's an Athlon with 512 RAM and Win XP installed. Is there any way to do this? Thanks,

That potential damage that you hear about is practically negligible, but having the drive shut off after a while (or go into standby) is still a good idea – it conserves power, at least. In Windows XP, you do this by going to the Control Panel, and selecting Power Options. Here you can set up power schemes, which are sets of rules regulating when and how your hard discs should "rest".
