I'm using Outlook Express as my default news reader, and I'm fairly satisfied with it. However, as I understand, I won't be able to use it to access some groups, like for instance those handling the google groups, because they require a web-based news reader? Is this correct? If so, what application would you suggest for a novice Win XP user? Thanks in advance.

You're a little off-track here. A web-based news service does indeed require you to use a web-based newsreader, but you usually don't have to download anything new. "Web-based" essentially means "works in your browser". You just point your IE or whatever it is you're using to groups.google.com or another news server, and it should pick up from there. However, IE as a newsreader does leave a lot to be desired, and you should consider switching to another browser (even if for no other reason than this).
