My DVD burner is misbehaving again, and in weird ways this time. When I put in a blank DVD (various brands tested) it detects it as read-only media, even though it's an R or RW disc. Also, Windows Explorer says the drive is "CD-ROM", even though it saw it correctly as a DVD-RW drive when there was no disc in the drive. So the bottom line is, I can't burn anything any more! What gives?

IIRC it's a Windows XP bug. To correct it, you'll need to install some update or other… I don't know the exact versions but you should check out the MS support site (support.microsoft.com), it's a known issue there, and they have the download I mentioned. Just do a search there for "HP DVD", and see what comes up.
