| My scandisk reported bad sectors on my D: partition. System is installed on C:, just to know. Is there any kind of software that will handle this? So, How to get rid of these bad little things? My Windows 98 is working fine, except loading sometimes takes long, like opening my computer. Are these bad sectors really harmful and what will happen if I dont remove them? I would appreciate if someone could explain me what are bad sectors? Thanks! |

| If you dont remove them, they will be harmful, like, your system will fail. Bad sectors appear when your file system doesnt store files in a proper way. Or you delete some files, and file system makes a mistake. Like, doesnt delete them from the registry or memory map. I think that scandisk can handle it, there is an option called automatic repair. Switch it on and start Scandisk again. There are two types of bad sectors; physical and logical. Those physical can be tricky. They are physical damages on the surface of your hard drive, and they appear due to the bad electrical network or if you drop it on the floor. Ive explained you about a logical in the first few sentences. So, run Scandisk and enjoy. If you have physical bad sectors, there is a program that can mark them, so system wont use them. I cant remember its name, but you can easily find it on the internet. Cheers! |
