Microsoft chair Bill Gates, speaking at the RSA Conference, outlined four principles for the future of cybersecurity.
The first is the "trust ecosystem", in which network mechanisms leverage trust relationships between parties to offer or deny access. For example, the Longhorn version of Windows Server will have features for certificates and federated identity.
Second is building security into the design process. Toward that end, Microsoft has been using WinFX, a managed programming module, for Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7, adopted the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL), and added code scanning tools to Visual Studio 2005.
Third, security must be made simple for users, a principle Microsoft followed when building the Windows Security Center and the OneCare security package.
Finally, underlying platforms themselves must be trusted so users can safely move data across multiple devices. Gates believes these goals will eventually eliminate passwords and move users toward two-factor authentication.
