Everything was working perfectly OK until the other day, when Firefox starting getting "invalid page" error reports. Not long after, a bunch of other programs started doing that too! The message is usually pretty much the same: Mozilla Firefox caused an invalid page fault in module (XYZ) at (0123). I tied deinstalling firefox, but it's too late, the problem stuck. Anyone have any clue what's going on?

You were on the right track when you tried to reverse-engineer installations, but you need to look for the recent ones: Did you install anything right about the time before the invalid page errors started to show up? If so, try making a system restore check to some time before that. See here for more info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q286180/
