A weird thing happened the other day: I burned a DVD with some documents, some audio/video files, and some other stuff, on a Windows XP machine. Then I took it to a Mac running OS 9, and copied everything to the HD. Now, the file names are all messed up – some are shortened (mostly those that share a prefix of some kind), and some are changed into random gibberish, and this includes file extensions. Very few remain unchanged. Is this a known issue when moving files between the two OSs? How do I work around it?

AFAIK, it's not a known issue, and sounds really odd to me. Did you check the files on the DVD when you burned it, to see if they came out all right or were renamed/altered even there? Because it sounds to me something went wrong during the burning process itself. What software were you using there, not XP's default Explorer burning thingy I hope?
