My external USB hard drive seems to have died the other day, though I'm still not sure if that's what happened. It doesn't work any more, the system won't recognize it, and clicks and ticks of some kind can be heard from it. I kind of hoped it was something else (because the HDD holds extremely important data), so I tried it at a different port, same results. Is there any way I can salvage this, at least get the data back if not repair the drive itself?

My guess would be no. The clicking sounds you hear suggest that it's a malfunctioning motor, and that's not something you can remedy at amateur level (which I'm assuming you're at, like most of us here). If the data is valuable to you, the best course of action would be taking it to a professional recovery service. Messing with it on your own is more likely to mess it up further, maybe beyond chance of repair.
