Hello. This is my situation. I recently installed Windows XP, and it worked OK. Then I downloaded the Service Pack 2 update, hearing about the safety features that it adds. However, when I installed this, I could not restart the machine at all. I finally chose to perform a system restore, returning to the previous state. However, now many of my OS applications work poorly or not at all, including Windows Media Player and Outlook Express. What am I to do? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Generally, doing a restore/repair after a failed installation/update is a bad idea, and should be used only as a last resort. It tends to fuck up the system fairly often, and it seems that's what happened in your case. Instead, you should have just used a disk image for backup, that would've restored it properly. Now I'm afraid your only hope (short of a reinstall) is trying that SP 2 installation again, to finish the job, although I wouldn’t bet on it going through now.
