I’m the one of the miserable people who still have to undergo the torture called dialup, but a friend told me to buy an external modem because it is better for some reason which I haven’t understood. And I have done that but my PC doesn’t recognize that external modem Can you tell me why this is so and what to do in order to fix it. I hope that this modem is not damaged.

Hm, I really don’t believe that the fact tat a modem is external can increase the speed, but I’m not very into PCs and hardware. And while I was using dial up and trying to find out the way to increase the speed at least minimally nobody I was talking to about the problem never told me something like that, and those guys were pros. As or your problem about our PC not recognizing the eternal modem, the only thing that come to my mind is the fact that they maybe are not compatible. Or it’s not well connected. The last idea that occurs to me is that maybe you have forgotten to install the drivers if there are any.
