I have a problem connecting an external HDD (Hitachi) to my G4 through a FireWire port. Specifically, the system (OS X) won't recognize it at all. However, when I connect it via USB, it's recognized and installed normally. Of course, due to obvious reasons (speed), I would prefer to have it on FW. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "won't recognize it"? Is it not detected at all, or does it detect as a different model, or an entirely different piece of hardware? In any case, the options you might try (if you haven't already) would be to reset your NVRAM and/or PRAM. Do this by pressing Command + Option + O + F while starting up (Com + Op + P + R for PRAM), then "reset" at the prompt.
