OK, here's the situation: I'm not really skilled when it comes to Excel, but my job isn't hard: have this huge XLS file that I need to edit periodically, just add in some minor changes. However, about 50% of the times I edit it, I can't seem to save it. I make the changes, click "close", then Excel prompts me whether I want to save the file or not, I click "Yes", but the prompt returns! This keeps happening until I click "No", at which point it closes and I lose the changes! This thing is driving me up the walls! Anything I can do about it, short of reinstalling MS Office? TIA.

I suppose you already tried saving the file before you close Excel? What happens then, does the save prompt pop out, are the file changes saved, or what? You could also try saving the file under a different name (File / Save As…), and seeing if that helps. Of course, the most probable diagnosis is that you have a corrupted file, in which case there is very little you can do. You should check if this happens with other Excel files as well, in which case it's a problem with the application and not your file, which I suppose would be OK, since a new install might help.
