OK then, here's the deal: I had to back up my data before formatting. I used a friend's old HD (10 GB in size). I got everything over, formatted by own HD, and copied back the files. The problem is, I can no longer access any of the files! I click on what used to be a pdf document, and it tries to open it with ACDSEE! I click a audio file, and it starts up MS Excel! The data's still real, I checked the file sizes and everything, and I think it matches. It's just that they're now recognized as the wrong type, extensions and all! What the hell happened, and how do I set it straight?

Wow, that's a strange one. I'm afraid it sounds like your data is lost, probably due to a corrupted storage unit. How old is that HD anyway? One thing, did you try manually changing the file type extensions, so that the right application would open them? Or even opening them directly form the application, through Ctrl + O or whatever (as opposed to just clicking on them)? What happens?
