I had some problems with Win Amp. The sound was really bad which ever kind of file I would play. I asked a friend for help and after he asked me to check preferences it turned out that my output plug-in was set to waveout. He told me to change it to directsound which I did and it really made things better. I don’t need any help now but I was just wondering what’s the difference between waveout and directsound and why do I even have that waveout plug-in when it isn’t working alright?

WaveOut is old Application Programming Interface for playing digital sounds in 32bit Windows OS's. Old Windows versions have good waveOut implementation and if you have Windows 9X then you should use waveOut. DirectSound is the new sound playback API and is built into more recent versions of Windows. I suppose you have Windows XP on your system and that’s why you need to use DirectSound to get the quality sound. If you want to find out more about it you should probably visit WinAmp’s site and it’s FAQ.
