For example, I heard there was the difference in HD sizes, that the old ones had like 8 GB and now the 360 has much more, but then someone told me that it's actually the same because the bigger ones were formatted so that they only use 8 GB anyway. Is this true? What's the point of it, if it is? Also, are the new ones backward compatible? Can you play older games on Xbox 360?

Not really "much more" but yeah, the new consoles have hard disks formatted to use only 8 GB of their 10 GB capacity. Don't really know why that was done, I suppose it's a technical issue of some sort. As for backwards compatibility, well, yes and no. On the 360, you need to DL an emulator off Xbox Live in order to play games written for the original Xbox.
