I’m trying to fix up an old computer with a 200 MHz CPU and a 20 GB HD… but I can’t get the HD detected. I reformated it, put in the Win 98 CD (the same OS installation it had before), and set BIOS to boot from CD, and it starts, but when it tries to install, it reports Hard Disc Failure. I took out the HDD and tried it on another machine, where it was recognized and written to normally. Is this a motherboard thing, or what? Because if it is, I’ll just give up now.

How’d you connect the HD to the other computer to test it? Was it as a slave? If so, you’ll need to set the jumpers on it to work as master when you put it back into the original machine. There should be some simple schematics on how to do this in the back of the HDD. Sorry if you’ve already tried this, but it’s a fairly common oversight, so I thought I’d bring it up…
