The cursor keeps wandering! It drifts across the screen, uncontrollable, then when it goes out off the edge of the screen I can try to bring it back. This started happening only recently, but then again, I haven't had this laptop for that long. I hear it's a design flaw? If that's so, what are my options, could I perhaps have it replaced with another model?

Yeah, apparently it is a "design flaw" with some Dell models, specifically Latitude 600 and 610 (but maybe others as well). There's sort of a metal bridge under the plastic that inadvertently connects the area around the pointer stick to the touchpad, or somehow transfers the pressure when you rest your hands on the thing to the touchpad. You can deal with it in one of two ways: Either cut the ribbon that connects the pointer stick (mostly useless anyway), or, alternatively, locate the metal bridge and isolate it form the touchpad in plastic lining. I hope this works out for you.
