I did some "maintenance work" (very basic cleaning and dusting off fans) on my computer, and took the opportunity to reformat the main partition of my HD, reinstalling the system. Now after I boot up, my DVD ROM drive is no longer detected! How is this even possible, I hadn't done anything to that drive?

Well, if you've been pulling cables out of their sockets, you might have reconnected them wrongly. Make sure that your CD/DVD drive isn't connected as a secondary master/slave now, if it wasn't that originally, of course. If it is, you can just reset its jumpers and leave it there, or unplug everything again and reconnect it properly.
