I'm trying to link a couple of old PCs together, and I'm being told I need a crossover adapter for that, since I don't have an Ethernet switch lying around. So, how much would something like this cost? Not much, I expect, I mean it's just a simple piece of hardware, right? Do I need two of them, one for either side, or what? Also, do I need some special sort of cable for connecting these adapters?

Basically, you have two options here. Run your normal, run of the mill, patch cable and connect the adapters you plug into either machine (you do need two, of course). The other option would be to get a crossover cable instead, which already has the adapters at both ends. Now, the second option may sound easier, and it is, but it's also more expensive if you're doing this across a long distance (over 60 ft. or so), because they'll charge you more for the crossover cable. If it's shorter, then it comes up at about the same.
