Hello. I’m trying to network a pair of laptops (both Dell, both Win XP), but it’s not working. Originally, I thought just plugging them both in with a crossover cable would be enough, that something will just pop up and I will see one laptop from the other as if they were added HDDs. Naive, I know. After hours spent fiddling with network settings, I still can’t get them to see each other, let alone transfer the files I want. Any assistance you have would be appreciated.

I’ll try pointing out a couple of obvious things, just in case you missed them. Sorry if you already tried these. One - did you make sure the IP addresses are OK? Subnet mask and gateway the same on both, specific Ips in the right range? Two – assuming you’re using default XP networking (I forget the name), make sure the workgroups are named the same on both machines.
