I got this e-mail message form someone that had several Word files (in doc format) attached to it. However, when I tried to open them, I'm told by MS Word that the files are corrupted and cannot be accessed. I can open them in notepad, but that just shows a bunch of garbled text, don't know if it's because they're word files or because they're corrupted. Is there some way to "fix" these somehow so that I can see what the big deal about them is?

First of all, what do you mean you got the email from "someone"? Is this someone you know? If it's not, you had no business trying to open the docs, because they can easily contain macro viruses of some sort. I wouldn't bother with them, just delete both the attachments and the message itself. If, on the other hand, the docs are sent from a reliable source, either ask for a resend, or check out the MS support site (support.microsoft.com) for general advice on corrupted Office files.
