I have several AVI files and I would like to convert them to a DVD format so I can watch them on DVD player. I suppose there is some software that takes care about his but I do not know which one. I have never been in video editing so I would be very grateful if you can recommend some simple yet effective software.

I can recommend you Intervideo WinDvd Creator. I have used it several times and it make DVD files without mistake. Also I would like to warn you that you will not get better quality when you convert from AVI to DVD. In fact, picture quality will get worse after this conversion. So, you could try to convert AVI to VCD (video CD). Most DVD players are able to read this format and you will get same picture quality as in AVI.
