I just got cable and installed Zone Alarm and now I keep getting messages about something called 'services and controller' app. It’s constantly trying to connect to internet. I don’t know what that application is. Could anyone here explain to me what does that do, do I need it and should I allow it to access the net?

First of all, I’d recommend you another firewall - Sygate's Personal Firewall because it provides you with lot more info on which app does what. As for your main question, the "Services and Controller" allows your PC to ask for a DNS server. That enables you to use the site name instead it's IP address. If it cannot access the net you are unable to use DNS lookup and translate the numerical IP address.
