My friend has a home network in apartment beside apartment I live in. I have a home network also and we thought to join our networks to make some LAN parties in spare time. We are not too proficient with networking so we do not know if this is just a wild idea or it is actually possible. Can you explain to me how to connect two LANs if it is possible?

It is very possible to join to LANs. Think only about large corporation network and it topology. To connect two LANs you will need additional router (I guess you already own router for your home networks). Connect routers from individual networks to this new router like you would connect computer and connect new router to internet. Routers have chaining ability so you will not need to do any additional setup except disabling DHCP on old routers and enable it on new one to give unique addresses along new LAN.
