| I have a computer for last two year. However, now I want to upgrade it and as a first thing I want to buy is a new bigger and faster hard drive. I read many things about that subject in the magazines but I could not understand the difference between ATA, SATA 1 and SATA 2 drives. What is better: ATA or SATA 1 or SATA 2? Can I connect IDE HDD to SATA power connectors? |

| Whenever you are in doubt, the best way is to choose the bigger number in the product type. I am joking but that is completely true in this case. ATA drives has overage speed of 100 Kb/s, SATA 1 drives have overage speed of 150 Kb/s and SATA 2 drives have two times bigger overage speed - 300 Kb/s. However, when you decide about your new hard drive you should first check what type of drive your motherboard supports. If it does not support SATA 2 standard you could not install a SATA 2 hard drive. The connector is the same but it simply would not work. Because your computer is two years old, there is also a possibility that it supports only ATA standard. You can connect IDE HDD to SATA power connector with a special adapter. |
