I'm getting some serious color distortion when I play AVI and MPEG files, and sometimes on DivX rips. It's mostly red tint, though sometimes greenish also. Could there be something wrong with my video card, or my monitor, or is it just the software I'm using? If I switch to some other media player, will it stop?

Depends. What are you using to play the video now? Rather than replacing the player, you should look into getting some newer video codecs for it. BTW, it's highly unlikely that this is a hardware problem (monitor, graphic card) if the only place the distortions show up is video playback. Like I said, update your codecs, and keep your fingers crossed that everything returns to normal.
