Hi, your friend was basically right,
There is no such thing as startup menu, but it is the right way to solve your problem.
Long lasting startup of your computer is caused by number of programs and applications that take time to launch with your system when it’s started. There are a lot software manufacturers that incorporate unnecessary program modules to start along with your system, and you have to get rid of it if you want faster startup and more stabile work.
Now, the easiest way to do that is to get some of third party applications that can do the job for you. There are a lot of such products that you can find on internet, some of them are even freeware and mostly they do the job.
There is the way to do the same thing manually, and it is not too complicated but it requires some advanced knowledge. Basically the procedure is following: First of all, and most important is to make back up of the things to be changed. Windows XP has built-in backup utility, and the item that should be backed up is the system state. This can also be done by System Restore functionality. The program modules that are viewable in system tray area are usually possible to uncheck for startup load by options item in corresponding program. Direct control of items starting up can be achieved at startup tab of msconfig utility ( Start>>Run and type msconfig ). When modifying this, one should be careful not to stop some essential system items such as graphics or sound driver modules. Next, some programs are enabled for startup by mean of adding their shortcut to startup folder. This can be observed at Start>>All Programs>>Startup, and it’s important to know that deleting these shortcuts doesn’t harm program itself, it’s still possible to run.
If all of this is too difficult for you at this time, maybe it’s better solution to use some of user-friendly applications that directly enable you to choose what do you want to start with your system.
