| I have OpenSuse and Windows XP on my computer. There is another empty 10 GB partition which I intended to use for trying various Linux distributions. But on a first attempt I ran in some problems. Basically, I have installed kubuntu on that partition and after few days playing with it I have decided to delete it and try another distro. After formatting partition where kubuntu was I was unable to boot in my system. Nor Suse nor Windows. Grub is giving me error 15 files not found. What to do now? Do I have to leave kubuntu on my system or there is a way to change grub install from kubuntu to OpenSuse? |

| Well, each time you install new Linux distribution grub writes files on that partition. That files are in /boot/grub directory of that Linux installation. If you format partition fileas are lost and that is what happened to you, but you can always install GRUB in MBR of hard drive and avoid such problem. It is quite easy to do. Boot you computer with some Live CD (no need for installation for this) and then in console type sudo grub. This will open grub shell. For instance, if you want OpenSuse to take control of MBR and it is located on first partition of first hard drive (hd0, 1) then in grub shell write root (hd0,1) and setup (hd0). Now Suse will control Grub which is placed in MBR and you can safely format other partitions while Grub will stay intact. |
