Is it possible at all? As far as I know, Windows ME supports only the FAT32 file system, but I have this friend, and she's telling me she's positive she read somewhere that it can be done – she doesn't know what forum this discussion was on, though. I did a little searching, and found no relevant mention of NTFS on Win ME. Does anyone know more about this issue?

Well, technically, Win ME is listed as a FAT-only OS, so the answer would be no. However! There's this tool called "NTFS for Win98", and I think (don't quote me on that) that is works for Windows ME, even for Windows 95. Just do a google search for something like "NTFSfor98", you should hit it. It's not freeware, mind you.
