| I installed an old copy of Windows XP Home on a friend's computer, and everything worked perfectly (at least internet-wise) until I decided to update. After I downloaded and installed the Service Pack 2, the cable modem seems to be incapable of making a connection about 50% of the time, and if it does it sometimes locks up: When I click "repair connection", it hangs on "renewing IP address" for a long time and then quits. Can anyone help me out here? I'm not really a networking expert myself… The modem/router is netgear FE311. |

The fact that the problem arose only after you installed SP2 suggests that there's nothing wrong with the modem itself, nor (presumably) with your network settings. The one thing that used to screw up connections regularly with SP2 is the in-built firewall: off by default in the older version of XP, it's on in SP2. Try disabling it. If this makes the connection work, then that's it, and you'll just have to reconfigure the firewall.
