My computer worked flawlessly for several years. Then, all of sudden, during some heavy duty operations it shut down completely. I have tried to turn it on again but only heard some strange beeps from the case. After that I left it alone for some time and tried again. Computer turned on without any problem but after hour or so turned off again. Can you shed some light on this problem?
It looks to me like CPU overheating problem. Motherboards have settings that do not allow CPUs to heat over certain temperature. When they reach that temperature motherboards shuts off cpu and whole computer. These settings can be changed or completely turned off in BIOS but I do not advise you to do so because then you CPU will most certainly die. Try to open your case and see if CPU fan is working properly. It may be broken or full of dust. Clean it and try again. Also try to note if computer works longer with opened case. If this is true then buy new (possibly stronger) cooler or add another if there is place for it in computer case.
