I have my desktop connected to my father's desktop via LAN. It all seems to be working fine when both computers are online. But when they’re not, my PC's CPU really slows down, to the point where you can’t actually do anything. I have a Winbond W89C840 LAN card. What could be causing this? I’d really appreciate any help!

A similar thing happens to me from time to time and I heard that it happens to a lot of other people. The thing is that when the network is not connected your computer keeps on looking for things that aren’t there – your father’s computer, in other words – and it takes up a lot of CPU’s resources. The solution is obvious: keep it connected.
