CD drive freezes up when reading CDs

I have a serious problem with CD drive. When CD media is inserted in CD device then CD starts to read it for a few seconds and then everything freezes, including Windows XP. This behavior started few days ago. Until then everything worked fine and I can not recall that I have made any software or hardware changes prior to this problem. Any ideas?

Hello. My first thought is that CD drive is broken and that you need new one. I have seen several cases when broken CD device results in system freezing when CD media is inserted. Sometimes updating drivers or CD firmware ca help solving this issue but I do not think that will help in your case.
