I need some help with automatic Windows updates. I downloaded the latest updates from the Internet. I have XP installed on my computer for a long time and everything worked fine. However, when I try to open downloaded file and install it I get an error message. I was unable to install it and now my CD-Rom displays directory but will not open anything.

There are several reasons that could cause problems like yours. First, it could be an error in the process of downloading. Your update file might be damaged. You could try to download it one more time and than try to open it again. Second, you might not have a proper version of os installed on your PC. Your version of update could be for some other version of os. In that case, you have to find and download a proper version for your version of os. Third reason for your problem could be that your updates need some other service pack. If that is your problem, you need to find out what are those things, download and install them first. Personally, I do not think that your problem with CD-Rom have anything with that update. Your CD head is probably near the end of its lifetime and you should think about changing your CD-Rom.
