I have a Sony CD/DVD R/RW optical drive on my laptop, and it has been working perfectly for ages now, until recently that is. Since the other day, it seems that drive is no longer recognized by Windows XP as a "burner" at all, and it won't even try to burn a CD/DVD. Any idea what might have caused this all of a sudden, and what I could do to repair it?

This was a popular issue back when XP's Service Pack II was initially released. I don't know if it can be the same problem, but it can't hurt to try. You'll need to edit your registry according to the directions found on this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529
Good luck with that, and don't forget to back up before you try it.
