Best way to erase my HDD?

I want give my hard disk to charity. I will erase it, of course. I want to know is what the best way for erasing it is. I do not want someone to recover any data from my hard drive. Some of the data which I will erase are very important. Do you know some way to erase it safely? Maybe you think that I am paranoid, but

I do not want think about it. For me, the best way for erasing is way with windows. It is easy, it is safely. Only you should do is when you start to erase it choose option for complete format, not for quick. Regarding backup your data from erased hard disk, I have tell you that for that you need very expensive devices and software. So, dont be so paranoid.
