I used a friend’s USB HD to transfer some photos from his laptop to mine. Unfortunately, after we finished copying and plugged HD back to his laptop it acted as if it’s blank and we were asked to format it. We didn’t do it, of course. It was NTFS formatted before. And now I’m looking for some data recovery software – a freeware if there is a good one. Thanks in advance!

I think that you probably damaged the partition-table so you should try using Testdisk . It is free but I’m not sure if it works on USB devices. Still, you should at least try it. It helped me when I had a similar problem. Or if it doesn’t help, try googling a program called recovery.exe. By the way I think that keeping external hard disk NTFS formatted is not a good idea since NTFS is not "portable" IIRC.
