Avast! anti-virus not detecting a thing

Hello! I am running Windows XP operating system and I have some difficulties. My system is very slow and I cannot open some files and folders. I am convinced that my system is infected. I have installed Avas! But this antivirus did not detect a thing. So, can you tell me what the problem actually is? Thanks!

Hello! If you have installed antivirus software after infection, I can tell you that there are good chances that malicious software blocked your antivirus, Avast!, to detect it. So, I think that it would be best to visit some online antivirus and scan your computer. I am sure that you will find and remove nasty.
