I have problems with MAC OS8 installation on ATA drive. During scan an preparation disk is visible for some time , then it becomes invisible and vice versa. I am even not able to copy install files on that drive. Is there any way to install operating system on my PowerMac 5500?

First of all, did you format the drive with the setup program? You will have to make tools floppy disks. Boot computer from CD, open the folder Disk tools Images, choose the image according to your country and start "Make Disk Tools Floppies". You will end up with two floppy disks. One is for SCSI drives, and another for IDE drives. Reboot the computer and than boot it with the floppy for IDE drives. You will be able to format drive now and install OS. And one more thing. Check if your version of Mac OS8 supports IDE drives.
