I have this external hard drive (HP manufacture, 160GB capacity) that I got off a friend's old system. Now, it worked perfectly OK there, but when I connect it to my machine (Win XP SP 2) and try to install the drivers, I get only an error message saying there has been an "access violation" in some .dll or other. What's this all about, then? What do I do to install the drive?

On Windows XP, you should be able to just plug in an external drive and let it roll, you shouldn't have to install anything. Is the drive detected at all when you plug it in? Is that when the error message pops up, or is it when you attempt this software installation that you mention?
